Yo Mamma's Big Fat Booty Bandwww.bootyband.comWhen the Booty Band hits the stage, everybody dances! Having fun and feeling good is the philosophy of this Asheville, NC based 6 piece band that has been hitting the road since 2002. Their mix of triumphant horns, laid-back grooves, and heavy backbeats is what has carried them back and forth across the nation, from club to club, smiling face to smiling face, day to day, note to note. Adding colorful costumes and interactive stage personalities is just part of the show,...Booty Band brings the FUNK!
The members of Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band came from all over the Eastern seaboard, eventually meeting in the little town of Boone, NC in 2002. The band re-located in 2006 and is currently based out of the beautiful mountain gem of Asheville, NC. Gregbob "Rescue in the Night" Hollowell, from Connecticut and Michigan, is in charge of melodical explosions on the saxophones. When his hands are free, you may see Greg morph into the entity known as "Bongo Fury" or summon voices of various guest characters that he channels through the vocal chords. His partner in crime, the other half of the Asheville Horns, Derrick "Juices and Berries" Johnson, blows furious funk and cool jazz tones from the bell of his trombone. You can always expect to see Derrick engaging our friends in the audience and occasionally strumming the electric guitar, bringing the room to a warm, fuzzy whirlpool of emotions known as "Jazz Odyssey." Speaking of electric things, J.P. "Smoke Machine" Miller, a recovering Florida beach freak, takes control of most guitar associated sounds, while hopping on the mic or blazing trails through the ether with nasty synth and keyboard sounds. Al Al "Sweet Nasty" Ingram, originally from Laurinburg, NC, is in charge of funky threads and all frequencies below the waist. Al Al will not respond to "Hey Bootsy," but he will sing his heart out right into yours, while communicating directly with your hips via thick bass lines. If you find yourself tapping your feet while waiting for a drink at the bar, chances are that it's because of this guy: Lee Allen. Also from the LBG, NC, Lee is one half of the power house duo, Eymarel, that the Booty Band recently absorbed. The other half of the new addition to our wonderfully motley crew is Mary "Nuke 'em" Frances. Originally from Southern Virginia, Sister Mary holds down the heavy end of the keys, organs and synths, while pleasing the crowds with sensational vocals. Behold the glory!

Trampled By TurtlesWith four self-released albums to their credit and a word-of-mouth reputation that draws legions of diehard fans to their must-see-to-believe live shows, northern roots music hybrid Trampled by Turtles are set to release Palomino, their first album through Thirty Tigers/RED, on April 13th, 2010. With a sound that's a bracing hybrid of classic American songwriting, bluegrass and folk, this is forceful acoustic music from the land of ice and snow -- of dark winters, isolation and numbing cold -- delivered at breakneck pace with the fervor of religion. "The lightning-fast 'White Noise,' a song off last year's Duluth album, exhibits the aggressive picking style that led the Onion's A.V. Club to dub Trampled by Turtles 'perhaps the best live band' in Minnesota. But tracks such as 'Empire' hew closer to the Avett Brothers' aching melodies and wall-of-strings aesthetic, while the somber "Methodism in Middle America" could easily pass for a Nirvana cover rendered on a rural back porch." -- Denver Post |

NANDANanda: A Japanese expletive used in reaction to something surprising or outlandish. A tidal wave of dance, juggling, and crazy kung-fu acrobatics, Nanda fills the house with unrelenting skill and comedy woven into a sonic soundscape; this spectacle will tear through any preconceptions of entertainment and the world. The profoundly organic performance given by these four friends has been evolving slowly over the last twenty years, since the young gentlemen met as toddlers in their hometown of Port Townsend, Washington. Those four feral little hippy kids have grown into four enlightened ninja jugglers with the skills to win a revolution. Nanda is: Chen Pollina, Kiyota Sage, Misha Fradin, & Tomoki Sage. The chance to see these modern day heroes in action is an opportunity of a lifetime and should not be overlooked! "Nanda, a four-man troupe that does juggling, stick-fighting, acrobatics and more, is a knockout, pulling off moves with airborne objects that are half-dance, half-wizardry. They're funny, smooth and daredevilishly inventive." -Michael Upchurch, The Seattle Times "The Nanda boys do things I always wanted the Karamozovs to do, but couldn't hire the talent... ...Go, Nanda! Banzai!" -Howard Patterson, The Flying Karamozov Brothers |

Pamyuawww.tribalfunk.wordpress.comWe call it Tribal Funk and World Music… And so will you! It is our enchanting Inuit harmonies, the sound of the didgeridoo, and the thunderous roll of the African djembe that causes a rich explosion of cultures. We as Pamyua perform in many ways, one as an a cappella group in which traditional Inuit songs are mixed into a unique classification of sound. To experience the fullness, you must hear and see us perform with the various styles and arrangements of the ultimate new world-groove. The well-mixed sound re-interrupts what cultural music is all about. We're creating a sound that has it's own culture - it's African - it's Inuit. We have created a sound that will make you believe that there is an actual musical tradition for our mixed heritage. Enjoy!
The Alaska founded group Pamyua started ten years ago as a dream by two brothers to share the ancient stories of their people through music and dance. Stephen and Phillip Blanchett, who are of Yup'ik Inuit and African American decent, quickly gained the attention from music lovers of all types.
The third member to join the group, Ossie Kairaiuak, grew up traditional dancing in Chefornak, Alaska. Pamyua was then officially formed and became publicly recognized throughout Alaska as ambassadors of modern Yup'ik culture. It was in 1996 when Pamyua met Karina Møller. The Greenlandic Inuit singer joined the group and they immediately started performing as a quartet traveling internationally in Europe, Asia, North and South America. At the 45th Annual Grammy Awards in March of 2003 the group was chosen to represent Native American music. The Celebration of American Music was held at Times Square Studios, NY. Pamyua lived up to their reputation as a highly energized and entertaining group. The concert was just prior to the release of their anticipated third album, Caught in the Act, which won Record of the Year at the 2003 Native American Music Awards. |

SpiralKissed by stardust from the rings of Saturn, Vivian became Spiral and was thereby inspired to create a unique, mesmerizing style of hoop dance. Part whirling dervish, circus artist, modern dancer, yogi and acrobat, her life was forever transformed by a love for circles and an affinity for revolutionary motion. Her engaging performances have wowed audiences from the catwalk in Hong Kong, to nightclubs in Vienna, to a boisterous crowd of 20,000 in Michigan. Her skills include hoop manipulation, contact juggling, fire dance, aerial silks and lyra (aerial hoop). She performs and teaches all over the globe. |

Blue ScholarsBlue Scholars have emerged out of the erupting Northwest hip-hop scene with soulful beats, poetic yet political rhymes and a reputation for dynamic live performances. With two full length albums and 3 EPs, the group has become one of the top West Coast independent hip hop acts, known for their energetic and always entertaining live shows and a world view that blends the personal and the political, but unafraid to party in the process. Emcee Geologic and DJ/producer Sabzi come from vastly different musical approaches to experiment with a unique, new sound that still echoes the classic boom-bap of a bygone era (see: A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets).
Prior to their collision, Geo had already begun making local rounds as a battle emcee and spoken-word poet, while Sabzi honed his skills as a classical and jazz-trained pianist while attending indie ska and punk shows. This unlikely partnership set the precedent for what distinguishes the group from the vast sea of independent hip-hop artists -- the ability to strike a balance between worlds usually seen distant from one another. Poetic lyricism with beats you can dance to. Marxist theory mixed with Baha'i spirituality. Musical influences ranging from Thelonius Monk and Aphex Twin to Marvin Gaye and J Dilla.
However, the bridge between the two artists goes far beyond musical interests. Blue Scholars is as much rooted in the music as it is in serving the people. Their experiences as college students provide an intellectual dimension to their craft, while their backgrounds as second-generation sons of working-class immigrants keep the music grounded. Armed with a purpose beyond creating music for music's sake, Blue Scholars take the classic form of the emcee/DJ duo (Gangstarr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Eric B. & Rakim) while carrying the essence of the struggle shown by hip-hop luminaries such as Public Enemy and KRS-One. Since 2002, the duo has become renowned live show veterans, rocking over 300 shows with the likes of Kanye West, De La Soul, Immortal Technique, Q-Tip, and supporting such acts on tour Matisyahu, Zion-I, Gym Class Heroes, Flobots and the Coup on tour, labor organizing conferences and youth-run community center shows to playing the main stage at Sasquatch! (2006 & '08) and Bumbershoot (2006), and in 2007 their own Northwest Hip Hop festival "The Program" which sold out 5 nights in a row. In June 2006, Blue Scholars joined forces with Common Market (emcee RA Scion and DJ Sabzi) and emcee Gabriel Teodros (of Abyssinian Creole) to launch MASSLINE, a new artist-run independent record label. Partnering with Rawkus Records to release Bayani to a larger audience, Blue Scholars' aim to mobilize more minds and bodies towards liberation while keeping their mission the same as it ever was: to serve the people. |

Ratfish Wranglers"Troll and his band take over where the B-52s 'Rock Lobster' left off in the late 80s/many years ago. Living the artist's life in Ketchikan, Alaska for 25 years, Troll has swum far below the currents of modern art and music, and surfaced for air with a net full of images and songs about such underwater oddities as the ratfish, the sex life of the salmon and the legendary Bombastodon.Set to a hypnotic beat that pounds like a fishboat diesel, and backed up by a loose-knit set of friends including a champion fiddle player and siren-like back-up singers, his songs reach out to the spirit of the fisherman in all of us!" |

Nicole's two CD's, 1998's "From the Beginning" and 2002's"Not Forgotten" display Nicole's talent not only as a performer but also as a songwriter. Nicole's songs range from good time, get up and dance numbers like "Let's Roll" and "Baby Loves Me" to songs that talk about what's happening in our hearts and in our society, songs like "Not Forgotten" and "Big Something." She also knows how to attract the Northwest's top musicians, as the lineups on both of her CD's show.
Originally from San Francisco, Nicole began playing the blues in earnest after sitting in on a jam session with Bay Area musician Johny Nitro. Nicole played in Bay area clubs, and in 1992 she was nominated for Best Female Vocalist for teh Bay Area Blues Awards. While in San Francisco, Nicole met and jammed with Keith Richards, who encouraged her to pursue her trade.

Kim BeggsAward winning singer-songwriter Kim Beggs releases Blue Bones on Black Hen Music label (Canada) and Burnside Records in the US. Sincere and vulnerable, clear eyed and tough, the familiar themes of love, loss, and hard fought freedom that Beggs so convincingly explores, have reached a new level this time out. On Blue Bones, the effortless grace and breezy delivery that has become her vocal trademark are supported by some of North America's most respected roots musicians to make this the best sounding album of an already impressive career. Kim Beggs hasn't always made her living as a singer-songwriter, and as someone who began work at the tender age of twelve, the road has never been easy for her. Born in Val d'Or, Quebec and raised during her younger years in the mining towns of Northern Ontario, Kim inherited a worker's hands and a sturdy disposition before leaving her Toronto home to arrive in the Yukon in the winter 0f 1991. With only fifty dollars in her pocket and a pawnshop guitar, Beggs spent more than a decade swinging a hammer, and working in the trades before she started performing away from the campfire and singing her own songs. It's often been said that all Canadian artists are influenced by geography, and even though the soul informing Kim Beggs' music might sound Appalachian, it's easy to hear how the expansiveness of the Yukon allows her creative imagination to roam. The west was settled long ago and Kim's frontier heart needed somewhere to inhabit, merge with and make her own. Like all of Kim Beggs' music, the songs on Blue Bones authentically capture the rustic charm of the Canadian north, and allow people down south to experience the vicarious thrill of life in the outback from the comfort of their homes or a seat in a concert hall. It's not surprising that Kim has garnered a lot of praise and attention throughout her career. She represented the nation at Canada Day celebrations in London's Trafalgar Square and, most recently, was a nominee in CBC Radio's Songquest competition. 'Wanderer's Paean' earned her a Canadian Folk Music Award and Western Canadian Music Award nomination along with a Porcupine Award for Find of the Year. While 'Streetcar Heart' earned her a Just Plain Folk (U.S.) award nomination. So, with all the attention garnered for her first two releases, there's a lot riding on the release of Blue Bones. Thankfully, in working with Juno award winning producer Steve Dawson, Kim Beggs has found a collaborator capable of helping her bring her vision to its fullest fruition. Blue Bones features nine original tracks as well as four well chosen cover songs. Beggs offers a stunning version of the old traditional, 'I'm Thinking of My Blue Eyes' that will melt the most cynical of hearts as well as interpretations of classics from Bob Dylan, Patty Griffin, and Jack Clement that are sung in such a way that they sound as if she wrote them herself. Kim Beggs is an original talent who makes music that transcends style and fashion. Without so much as a backward glance at what others consider 'hip', she instead makes music that is true. Bold, brilliant, dark and sincere, Blue Bones is destined to become one of the most memorable roots releases of 2010. |

John StatzWisconsin songwriter John Statz loves to tour like bears love honey (bears really do love honey, right? or do people just say that?). In just the first five months of 2009, he has played shows in far away places like Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Austria, Alaska, and California. Travel is John's muse, and he has written songs in such locations as a train car headed to Sarajevo, Bosnia, the cozy mountain town of Winter Park, Colorado, and a lonely apartment in tiny Thomas, West Virginia. At the young age of 25, John has already performed in 28 different states, as well as in 6 other countries, and his first album, Dusk Came Slow, won a Madison Area Music Award in 2007 for "Folk/Americana Album of the Year". Stay tuned, an intergalactic tour is right around the corner |

Behind SapphireBehind Sapphire is an acoustic-driven indie pop band from Vancouver, BC. Started as a bedroom projected headed by Matthew Mazankowski and Grant Cassell; the duo, accompanied by local producer Tom Dobrzanski (Said The Whale, Hey Ocean, We Are The City), released a debut album full of rollicking backbeats, sweeping orchestration and outsized arrangements that borrow nostalgia of Disney, nod to the Beatles and carry the croon of Billie Holiday and Jason Mraz. Onstage, you'll find their pared-down string-flourished anthems nothing short of inspiring. With a youthful humor and charm, Behind Sapphire is certain to find a home in your heart. |

Scott HuckabayGuitarist and self-described "sonic alchemyst" Scott Huckabay imbues his music with a shamanistic fervor, drawing from a vast palette of tones, techniques, and tunings in the ancient solfeggio scale of 528hz, which is connected to the heart chakra to create rich, otherworldly, acoustic-trance soundscapes. His compositions embrace the healing, transformative power of music where his guitar is a sacred instrument that celebrates the ultimate possibilities of life and love... |

Blvd ParkSpaghetti Western Desert Folk Imagine this: you're somewhere in the southwest, kickin' back on a rocking chair, looking out over the wide rolling countryside with a warm breeze gently blowing through your hair; and heck, maybe even a glass of whiskey nice and neat in your hand. With plenty of blues, gypsy, folk and swing, Blvd Park's music has its roots in traditional bluegrass and country music. A double bass, guitar, trumpet, fiddle, snare drum, and the occasional mandolin, steel guitar or banjo, make up the composition of the group. Four to five part harmonies make up the vocals, with both male and female contribution and leads. |

Caleb Aronson"With the wit and temperament of early Paul Westerberg or classic Neil Young, Caleb Aronson contributes music that is meaningful, real and authentic." ~ Knock Out Singer-songwriter Caleb Aronson was born and raised in Alaska. When he wasn't wandering the hills and mountains, he was fishing... and causing trouble. Aronson taught himself guitar and, with his love of poetry, began writing songs at the age of 14. Since then, Aronson has played venues from Folk Festivals, clubs, coffeehouses, and stern-wheel riverboats in Alaska, to the subways and the legendary Club Passim in Boston, MA. He's opened for national acts and won songwriting awards, including an award for his song 'Northbound' in a lyric contest hosted by American Songwriter Magazine, and an Individual Artist Grant Award from the Rasmuson Foundation of Alaska. |

BUFFALO BILL and his BAVARIAN BEER HUNTERSBUFFALO BILL and his BAVARIAN BEER HUNTERS is a bit like walking into an old time saloon set straight outta a Louis Lamour novel. Guns may not be a blazin', but the good times are rollin' wherever they saddle up. The cast of characters led by fiddler and lead vocalist Buffalo Bill (aka Mark Carroll), who coincidentally received his namesake because he looks like the one and only Buffalo Bill Cody, stomp a Texas two-step while doe-si-doe'ing around the heart of classic Kentucky bluegrass . Armed with fiddle and mandolin, Carroll's tunes raise hairs on the back of yer neck as if in an old fashioned stand-off, that inspires a whole lotta drinkin' and dancin' and hootin' and hollerin' along the way. The Texas influence could be traced back to Banjo Maniac aka Gregg Bigsby's early days playing banjo, "The original, unique 'celebration' rhythm that I play comes from my R & B background in the 60's. When I first started playing the banjo in 1969 I met Blues Great Mance Lipscomb who invited me to play with him at a local Saturday night dance in Washington On-The-Brazos, Texas and that eye-opening visit made a lasting impression on me and my banjo playing."
Bigsby and Carroll started playing with The Bavarian Beer Hunters in 2005. While playing often at The Pioneer Bar in Haines, Alaska during the summer commercial fishing seasons, these two took their OLD TIME and COUNTRY MUSIC SHOW to Germany and found themselves in joined by Germans, Jens Zerle the Tallest Bavarian Bluegrass double bass player, Doctor Milk aka Ben Esen on drums and the modern day Bavarian Cowboy, Uwe Schmidt, who holsters a mean electric guitar.
The alliance of Mark Carroll and Gregg Bigsby started as far back as 1972 while hitchhiking through Texas and Louisiana playing a mix of traditional country, Texas blues and folk, fiddle tunes, Cajun, bluegrass, and western. In September of that year, The Willie Nelson entourage picked up the two hitchhiking from Aspen to Santa Fe. With Bigsby on banjo and Carroll on string bass they were invited to the show where they played as a duo and then followed a set with Nelson playing his soon to be hit single, "Good old Mountain Dew". Willie Nelson remains an influence today alongside such greats as Woody Guthrie, Bob Wills, and Mance Lipscomb. Bigsby says, "Playing with superstar Willie Nelson inspired us in 1972. Inspiration strikes in all directions when high energy, high powered music is being played . " Sharing the stage The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Taj Mahal inspires as well. Buffalo Bill and the Bavarian Beer Hunters have played the world including Ferrara, Italy International Buskers Festival, Southeast Alaska State Fair, Fiesta in Santa Fe, and the International Bluegrass Music Association Convention in Nashville |

The Thundercats"A return to the yesteryear of slamming three-piece rock trios, The Thundercats are a refreshing, new sound from Southeast. Hailing from Juneau, Alaska, they play an original blend of blues-rock and reggae, influenced and informed equally by punk music as Bob Marley. The radical range of influence makes for a lot of crossover sounds in their songs, so be prepared for some genre-bending fusion at its finest-- this band's talent lies in their ability to make the changeup between their various influences natural. They'll lay down a big, fat dub groove, weave it into a classic rock progression and make it sound like it was written that way. But that's because it was. Floating over the smoldering rhythm section, singer and guitarist Tyler Preston leads his band through a pumped-up, all-original set of spitfire reggae-rhymes and bombastic guitar solos leaving charred remnants of the Experience and the Wailers in their wake. His roots as a jazz drummer show in his unique approach to rhythm and his behind-the-beat singing and playing that adds weight and swagger to their performance. If you're looking for something unique, this is it. Thundercats HO!" |
